While the majority of the action takes place on Saturday, April 13, the folks at Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue will host a Basset Olympics from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, April 12, at the Ocean City Tabernacle. The afternoon will feature a lineup of lumbering, questionably trained, flop-eared hound dogs all waddling their way through a series of Olympic events including a 10-meter sprint, 15-meter hurdles, high jump (set at 6” to start) and an obstacle course. Oakcrest High School rising junior Brielle Smith won her second consecutive javelin championship at the AAU Junior Olympics Aug. 4-5 in Detroit. Smith, who trains at the Greg Geraci Track and Field Throwing School of Champions in Vineland, captured the 17-18-year-old 600-gram crown with a throw of 141 feet. She earned the 15-16 title last year with a toss of 128-2. Smith, a two-time state champion at Oakcrest, finished second in the event at last season’s NJISAA Meet of Champions. Smith, a Mays Landing resident, also plays goaltender for the Oakcrest girls soccer team and is a starter on the girls basketball team.
