Navigating 50 Bites+: Week One

Hope you’re hungry.

Because the biggest food journey since A.C. Weekly started food journeys is upon us. Our 50 Bites+ has a record-setting 65 bites — all in and around Atlantic County and, this time, even in Ocean City.

So how does one go about conquering each bite within the 50-day time period of Thursday, Oct. 12, to Nov. 30?

Don’t worry your pretty little head over it. We have your back. And, of course, we have your stomach, too.

We’re here to help you navigate your culinary tour. For Week One, we take you on a tour of the scenic towns of Ocean City, Somers Point, Linwood, Margate and back to the O.C. Let’s get started.

Week One:

We begin and end in the seaside resort of Ocean City — a newbie for 50 Bites+.

Start the day early, perhaps with a joyful bike ride along its lively Boardwalk, (Hey, eat this much and you’ll need to balance things out with at least a little exercise, right?).

Before that hunger pang turns into a full-blown pain, pedal on down to Manco & Manco Pizza for ... what else? Buffalo wings (What’d you expect? Pizza?).

From there, hop in the car — or stay on your bike if you’re really motivated — and cruise on over to Somers Point for a visit to the other Manco & Manco Pizza where now you’ll get pizza. And not just a “bite” of a slice, but an entire slice. After, saunter on over by the water and you can bang things out in S.P., with the kobe beef nachos at Tavern on the Bay — be sure to try a signature cocktail or even grab a beer to wash these bad boys down.

Marvelous Margate is just a skip and a jump down the causeway. Here’s where things get a bit more highbrow with schmancy items like the roasted garlic scallop skewer at Bocca Coal Fired Pizza and the to-die-for souvlaki at the divine Sofia.

Cross over the bridge inland to lovely Linwood, where a stop at La PizzaTega provides us with its homemade/handmade cheese involtini. Yes, they served this for 50 Bites+ last year, too. (Good memory!) But it’s so good that we demanded they bring it back again this year.

A stop at the new Linwood Exchange, and we can kill off five more Bites: a slice of buffalo chicken pizza from Tony’s Baltimore Grill; spicy sausage with marinara at Ernest & Son; and three somewhat more waist-friendly options — although at this point, who cares about waists? — the skordalia, a Greek garlic potato spread with grilled pita at Banzo; a meat-free avocado BLT with coconut “bacon” at The District Bar and another avocado delight, this time on toast, from Jar’d.

Now we’ll “circle back” (and not in that irritating corporate-email way) to the Ocean City Boardwalk to cap off the day at Tony P’s House of Pie for a bite of its adorable and delish pepperoni roll. The choice is yours to now work off your calories with a competitive round of mini golf or a leisurely stroll.

So there you go. One week down and already 12 bites done.

You are well on your way to achieving your goal. Head to to purchase your pass.
