There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who start planning next year’s Halloween attire on Nov. 1, and those who scramble to pull a look together the week of Halloween. Sometimes, even the best of us fail to plan ahead of time for October’s costume-party soirees, and we end up with the last, sad pirate costume at Party City.

Even as an adult, one of the worst parts of dressing up for Halloween is when you discover someone else at the party is sporting the same store-bought look. Similar to planning an outfit for a special event or a night out, uniqueness and originality reign supreme on Halloween.

The good news is that you can always gain inspiration from your favorite characters from film and TV over the years, and even use some of the of-the-moment, trendy items in your closet.

Trends from the ‘70s and the ‘90s are en vogue again, and taking some of these statement pieces to recreate looks from iconic characters from “The X-Files,” “Almost Famous” and cult-’90s fashion-girl classic “Clueless” will have everyone at this year’s Halloween party taking note.

Detective Dana Scully from ‘The X-Files’

Hairstyles and pantsuits popular in the ‘90s are making a comeback these days in a big way and chances are that if you are on-trend, you have black suiting in your closet. Add a crisp, collared-white shirt, a voluminous blowout and a fake FBI I.D. and it will be no mystery that this costume is complete.

Penny Lane from ‘Almost Famous’

There’s no cooler character than Penny from the cult, early-2000s classic “Almost Famous.” Epitomizing the ‘70s, bohemian-chic, dressing like Penny will not only emanate free-spirited rockstar vibes, but you will also be on-trend with an ensemble that is relevant today. This iconic character from film even has a coat named after her with the signature (faux) mohair by Show Me Your Mumu.

Cher from ‘Clueless’

It’s true what they say in fashion and in life: everything old, becomes new again. Including Cher from “Clueless’” yellow plaid suit. This fall season, plaid is a huge pattern, and we see brands like Forever 21 offering their own takes on this style. Every fashion girl grew up on this film, and if you add in some thigh-high white socks, and Cher’s signature backpack, you’ll be instantly recognizable.
